How to Prepare For a Colorado Safari with Colorado Jeep Tours

Posted: July 9, 2019 by Kelly Branyik

So it’s not exactly a safari, but it sure feels like one when you get in the back of one of these Jeep Rubicons. And funny enough, the word “safari” stems from the late 19th century Arabic meaning “safara” which means, “to travel”. Plus, you will likely see animals.

Colorado Jeep Tours is based in Cañon City, Colorado and takes you on epic rides in Fremont and Teller County. You will feel like you’re in a scene from Jurrasic Park once you step up into the passenger area.

Colorado Jeep Tours is based out of the same area as Raft Masters, one of the most prominent rafting companies in Cañon City. From there, you have the option of choosing a half day tour or a full day tour with some of the most amazing and knowledgable guides in the area. To learn more about their history, go here.

Not only can you experience Jeep excursions, Colorado Jeep Tours can hook you up with other great attractions in the Royal Gorge Regions, including rafting, a ride on the Royal Gorge Railroad Route, a wine tour, and more! See their other packages here.

But as for my recent trip with Colorado Jeep Tours, I took a full day ride with Tom the tour guide through Red Canyon and the Royal Gorge. Here’s what I learned along the way.

Go Places You’ve Never Gone Before

Truthfully, Colorado Jeep Tours gives you access to less traveled roads. No joke, most of the locals haven’t even been to the locations you’ll off road to. Many of these places, you would most definitely need a 4 wheel drive vehicle with high ground clearance so you don’t bust your oil pan.

During your Red Canyon trip, you’ll take the back roads to the arch and drive through BLM land. On the journey, you’ll see gorgeous red rock that was once part of the Fountain Formation. You’ll also see many prime locations for camping.

As for the Royal Gorge, you can take a seated drive across America’s bridge and to the other side while learning about the history of the infamous bridge and the land formations around it.

I won’t give to much more information away, for the sake of your knowledgable tour guides.

Beating the Heat

The weather is warm in Cañon City and you will find yourself exposed to the sun since the sides of the Jeep’s passenger enclosure will be open. You’ll feel the wind in your hair for sure, but you will also likely feel the burn of the sun as well.

Bring some organic sunscreen to protect your skin from the elements, while also taking care of your body (get a 15% coupon for this sunscreen here). You are also welcome to cover up your arms and legs if sunscreen is not an option, but keep in mind, the temperature can reach the high nineties in Cañon City.

Also, if you do get sunburned, Lavender lotion is a great way to relieve burn quickly.

Drink Water Before and During Your Trip

You will be on these excursions for as long at 3 hours, so please make sure to bring water to stay hydrated during that time. The tour guide doesn’t need you passing out from dehydration on the tour.

There are bathroom stops along the way, so try and hydrate your body the evening before your tour, rather than downing tons of the water the morning of. This way you can avoid the need to visit the nearest restroom.

Full Day Tours Get Lunch

Lunch at Eddy's Cafe - Colorado Jeep Tours

Granted, you can bring your own lunch if you want to, especially if you have dietary needs, but Colorado Jeep Tours provides you with an all you can eat burger and hot dog bar at the cafe across the street from the Raft Masters building.

Get burgers, cheeseburgers, veggie burgers, and hot dogs for lunch. Chips, raw veggies, cookies, and some fruit is provided as well as cold water and delicious lemonade for you to cool down after the first half of your full day trip.

You’ll have about 50 minutes to enjoy lunch before the second half of your day, so take this time to relax.

You’re Gonna Get Dirty

You’re spending most of your day on dirt roads. I went into this tour with a navy blue ball cap and came out with a very dusty and dingy faded one. If you aren’t a fan of dirt, either cover up or bring some baby wipes to clean your face off.

But part of the adventure is getting dirty and grimy and enjoying the Colorado adventure. And since there is a lot of dirt roads and paths to be wary of, it’s a smart idea to wear tennis shoes and close-toed shoes. Flip flops are not a good idea y’all.

Watch for the Wildlife

Nature Watching with Colorado Jeep Tours

Along your journey, you will see a variety of wild animals, so be on the lookout. In Cañon City, Mule Deer, and some whitetail deer are pretty much around every curve. You’ll also find Pronghorn, rabbits, ravens, red tail hawks, and if you’re lucky, some Elk or bear!

But watch out for mountain lions, this area is abundant in Mountain Lions. This is a great reason to bring a camera with you to take some nature shots of some of our little furry friends. I use the Sony a6000 for my photos, and on occasion, a Campark Camera.

Recap of Things to Brings

You don’t need to pack a whole suitcase of items, but I would suggest bringing the following things below:

  • Hat
  • Sunglasses
  • Waterbottle
  • Sunscreen
  • Binoculars
  • Cameras
  • Small backpack
