This coming weekend, I am spending the weekend in the Royal Gorge for a series of expeditions and adventures with Echo Canyon River Expeditions.
Echo Canyon is a family-owned and operated business but is also one of the largest commercial rafting outfitters in Colorado. They have been bringing people together on the water since 1978. They have been providing an all-around experience in the Royal Gorge region for some time now.
Not only do they offer rafting expeditions, but they also offer luxury accommodations at the Royal Gorge Cabins and a delightful menu at 8 Mile Bar and Grill.
For this weekend, I will be seeing everything that makes the Royal Gorge region exciting. Including, rafting down Big Horn Sheep Canyon, riding the Royal Gorge Railroad, visit the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park, Dinosaur Experience, and visiting the Holy Cross Abbey and Winery.
If you don’t know, I grew up in Florence, Colorado. A little town not far from the Royal Gorge, which means this trip is close to my heart.
So if you are looking at coming to the Royal Gorge this summer, below are some of my preferred packing tips.
Cameras
Obviously, if you’re getting on the water, I recommend bringing a camera device that you aren’t worried about getting wet. Whether that be a GoPro or a CamPark camera.
If you want a good camera for just everyday use while you’re exploring the Royal Gorge Bridge or even the Royal Gorge Railroad, I suggest bringing a nice camera with you.
I will be using my Sony a6000. I like this because it shoots video, it’s mirrorless and its lightweight. It’s perfect for trips where you don’t want to lug a big camera around.
Hats, Sunnies, Sandals, & Water Socks
Colorado weather is unpredictable. It could be snowing one day or sunny the next. And just because it’s overcast doesn’t mean you won’t get a sweet Colorado sunburn.
Bring a good hat, especially if you are going to be out on some white water or roaming around the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park. That sun blares right down on you on the river. And almost anything remotely related to a water activity is likely to burn your scalp.
Sunglasses are also a must. You’ll need them to keep that bright sun out of your eyes or keep the sparkle of the river from blinding you. You are incredibly exposed to sun and will find little shade in the Royal Gorge region.
I recommend a good comfy pair of sandals like Chacos, Keens, Merrells, or whatever floats your boat. Waterproof is the best! If sandals are not an option and you would like to go with a cheap method, water socks are amazing! They keep something on your feet and they are made for water.
Bathing Suits, Shorts & Shirts
If you’re rafting with Echo Canyon, they’ll provide you with the gear you’ll need to navigate the rapids. For this trip, they are providing me with a wet suit, helmet, and life jacket. That being said, definitely bring your own swimsuit. Something that is comfy and not as likely to fall off if your raft gets tipped for some reason.
Colorado summer weather can get pretty hot, so make sure you bring clothing that is breathable and possibly moisture wicking. The last thing you need is to be drenched with sweat while you’re adventuring.
And make sure your shoulders are covered.
Water Bags & Waterproof Everything
If you want to bring things like a camera, extra clothes, sunscreen, etc., I recommend bringing a waterproof bag. I have a rather large one that I use frequently when I am on the water.
While I don’t recommend bringing your valuables with you in the case you might lose them if you insist on bringing them, a waterproof bag is a good way to go.
Also, make sure you are bringing cameras that can be waterproof like CamParks or GoPros. I don’t recommend bringing a camera that could be damaged easily.
I like CamPark because it’s a $50 camera but still works nearly as well as a GoPro. If you lose it, you’re only losing $50 instead of $400.
Dark Sky Wear
If you opt to stay in the Royal Gorge Cabins, just know that the cabins are equipped with an indoor-outdoor fireplace. And if the night is cool, you may be able to sit outside, curl up under a blanket with your favorite book, and watch the stars by the fireplace.
A light pair of sweats and maybe some slippers can keep that dark sky evening nice and cozy for you.
Sunscreen
I’m not a huge fan of using sunscreen, mostly because I think there are a lot of chemicals in sunscreens that aren’t good for you, plus I think that the sun is good for you. Obviously, if you are outside for long periods, you may need that sunscreen, or you can opt to cover yourself with long sleeves to avoid the sun altogether.
If you need sunscreen but you want a natural solution with quality ingredients, I recommend the Organic Reef Safe Sunscreen by Sand Cloud. It is SPF 35 and they give you product descriptions on their website so you know what’s in it.
